Cell Phone Addiction and Anxiety

Power Down to Power Up

Technology has become the epicentre of our jobs and our personal lives. The majority of people bring their phones around with them everywhere they go. We’ve gotten so used to the convenience of a portable device, it’s hard to imagine life without it. But there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. And although our iphones and portable devices offer us services, communication with family and friends and even a make-shift flashlight, it’s important to remember the effects technology can have on our physical, emotional and mental well being.

Did you know:

  • 84% of cell phone users say they use their phone every day and can’t imagine leaving their phone at home.
  • 67% of cell phone users will check their phone even if it doesn’t buzz or send a notification.
  • Most cell phone users check their devices every 6.5 minutes.
  • 88% of people use their mobile device as a television.
  • 50% of cell phone users sleep with their phone next to their beds.

It’s no mystery as to why technology is affecting us so negatively. The blue light emitted from devices interrupts our sleep cycles, the constant pinging feeds our social media addiction and we feel more and more isolated as we spend more and more time on our phones and devices. Here are some more reasons that will hopefully convince you to power down:

  • Improves emotional wellbeing

It was recently discovered that checking Facebook throughout the day could lead to excessive feelings of jealousy, envy and loneliness. Seeing all of your friends having fun while you’re sitting by yourself can make you feel, well not so great. It may seem like Facebook is a social hub, but really it gives you a false sense of belonging that could lead to feelings of insecurity. The simple act of logging out of Facebook for a few days can rekindle a sense of passion and gratitude for the simple joys of life.

  1. Promotes peace and quiet

Being in solitude and experiencing quiet serenity in a peaceful environment is important for well being. With constant pinging and beeping in the background and even the anticipation of notifications can cause an unsettled mind. By plugging in your device, you can be sure that you are creating a calm, and peaceful environment so that your mind can recharge and rejuvenate properly.

  1. Allows for Presence

Being present is becoming quite a rare thing with the influx of cell phone use. Many people experience the feeling of missing out on experiences while they were too busy staring down at their screens. Joy is in the present, love is in the present and positive experiences are waiting for you in the present.

  1. Allows for Deeper Conversations

You may notice that when you power down your device, that you start having more meaningful, and deeper conversations with people around you. Without the distraction of technology in the back of your mind all the time, you can more easily focus on the topic of conversation at hand.
